Art Criticism: Describing, Analyzing, and Interpreting Artwork



Artist: Charles E. Burchfield 
Title of work: Orion and the Moon

1.   Be receptive - i like how the artist surrounds the moon and the tree with the house.

2.   Description – i see a a house, a tree, a moon, and the sky. the tree has some form of characters such as an eye and a nose starring at the house.

3.   Formal analysis – lines, colors, and shapes were clearly used to give the view a picture or a representation of the artist intention.
4.  Bracketing - it reminds me of an abandon house with a mysterious background.

5.  Interpretation - (content)  i think the artist was trying to show nature in an environment lacking the presence of occupants.

1.   Be receptive: great use of color to differentiate between the crickets and the tree branches.

2.   Description – a tropical forest with crickets in it.

3.   Formal analysis – coloring played an important role in this painting because of how the author differentiate the tree branches and the cricket.

4.  Bracketing - reminded my of a tropical forest with crickets.

5.  Interpretation - Crickets lives on trees and appear to sing or come out when its dark.

1.   Be receptive - great caption of a depressed mother, the viewer can clearly feel the mood of the mother

2.   Description – A mother thinking and smoking with his children around her, probably going through hard times.

3.   Formal analysis – space and value

4.  Bracketing - represent porverty

5.  Interpretation -  The hardship of a mother and her children
